Commercial drone pilots woke up to some good news Sunday morning when the FAA released a proposed rule allowing drone’s to be used for commercial purposes.
According to the proposal, drones that weigh less than 55 pounds could fly up to 500 ft at speeds not to exceed 100 mph. Drone operators will have to obtain a specific certificate and follow a number of regulations. These restrictions include keeping the drone in sight at all times, and avoiding restricted airspace, people, airports, and other planes.
It’s important to note that this is not a final rule, just the first step in a long process. The proposed rule will now be open to public comment.
