Mavic 2: DJI Wows us Again

Photos: DJI

As we have come to expect, any launch by drone stalwarts DJI is exciting news. They are always at the cutting edge of technology and lead the way in development. The new Mavic 2 is no exception.

What is really exciting is this launch incorporates two new models, the Mavic 2 Zoom with a 2X optical zoom and the Mavic 2 Pro with the amazing 1-inch sensor Hasselblad camera. Both are worthy successors to the popular Mavic Pro.

In DJI’s own words “See the Bigger Picture - Our dream has always been to make a drone that exists where engineering, technology, and the needs of the aerial photographer converge. A drone that embodies all of DJI's advanced, signature technologies, and is able to redefine what is possible for the world of aerial photography. In creating the Mavic 2, we have made this dream come true.”

They are built on DJI’s legendary 3-axis gimbal technology for smooth and steady footage. The 1-inch sensor delivers crystal clear color and amazing light. The overall image quality is outstanding.

The Hasselblad camera is legendary and has an adjustable aperture to optimize any light conditions. You will also get 20 megapixels (with CMOS sensor) aerial images and 10-bit Dlog-M color profiles for increased dynamic range and greater freedom when grading and editing. Thanks to the F2.8 - F11 adjustable aperture, you have greater control and better results in all light conditions. This control is particularly useful when shooting in low-light conditions and is one of the standout features of the Mavic cameras.

The 2 x optical zoom lens gives the ultimate in dynamic perspective for shots never achieved on a “consumer” drone before. This is real professional quality. The 48mm focal length also creates the perfect perspective. The Dolly Zoom shoots 4k video with H.265 compression for outstanding clarity and unbelievable detail.

The camera will do all of the necessary technical adjustments leaving you free to set up the perfect shot or footage. Even the ActiveTrack technology is intelligent and will predict the path of objects being followed. You also get Hyperlapse at the touch of a button for brilliant time-lapse footage. The enhanced HDR photo feature will give you a range of successive photographs with great clarity and enhanced dynamic range.

The Mavic 2 drones are still compact and foldable making them extremely versatile and easy to transport. DJI say it is their “most advanced aerodynamic aircraft to date”. Quite a statement considering the performance of many of their existing models.

Other amazing specs include an impressive 31 minutes of flight time and an incredible speed of 44 mph. The OcuSync 2.0 transmits at 1080p with a range of 5 miles. There is also 2.4 to 5.8 GHz auto switching. These brilliant features unleash a wealth of opportunity.

Yet another outstanding feature of the new Mavic 2 drones is the array of 10 sensors that will detect obstacles from all angles. This is an incredible benefit and the first on a consumer product.

Final thoughts

While DJI is starting to see a bit of competition in their segment of the market, innovation such as this will keep them the first choice for many drone enthusiasts as well as professional drone operators for some time to come.
